![]() CISR OverviewThe Center for Intelligent Systems Research (CISR) was chartered to advance the science of intelligent systems and foster its engineering applications. Fundamental and applied research is conducted in intelligent systems such as Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic, Genetic Algorithms, hybrid methods, and intelligent agents. Their applications are in pattern recognition, controls, model development, complex interactive networks, and networks optimization among others. A major focus of research is on safety in Intelligent Transportation Systems. CISR uses the fundamental intelligent systems methods to solve a variety of highway safety, vehicle control, rail transportation, and networks problems. At CISR, we have established a successful record of integrating leading-edge research from different disciplines. Intelligent systems are combined with analytical and information processing methods to solve real transportation problems. Our research is strengthened by establishing interdisciplinary teams of faculty from various disciplines. The research is tied into a multidisciplinary education program that draws from the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Electrical and Computing Engineering. Formal education, leading to a degree in Transportation Safety, includes courses in traffic engineering and highway safety. CISR also offers seminars and short courses. Almost all the research activities of CISR are supported by externally sponsored grants and contracts. Therefore, we have significantly increased financial opportunities for all our students by offering research fellowships and assistantships. The center is proud to attract highly qualified students who are conducting interdisciplinary research in engineering. We strive to provide the most rewarding educational experience for them. We are also proud of our student's and faculty 's accomplishments, pleased to share our research findings, and welcome your involvement and collaboration. Our goal is to continue on the path of excellence in all facets of research and education in intelligent systems and their application to serve humanity, society, and the nation. This site provides an overview of CISR and our research activities and projects. For more information, please contact the Center Director, Dr. Azim Eskandarian at (703) 726-8362 or via email at eska@gwu.edu. |
