Meshless Particle Methods for Nonlocal Continua

Chen, Y., Lee, J.D., and Eskandarian, A. (2001) “Meshless Particle Methods for Nonlocal Continua,” published in Advances in Computational Engineering & Sciences (edited by Atluri, Nishioka and Kikuchi), Tech Science Press, presented at Proceedings of the International Conference on Computational Engineering and Science, 19-25 August 2001, Puerto Vallerta, Mexico, on CD-ROM.

Abstract: The nonlocal field theory is introduced in this paper. The meshless particle method for nonlocal field theory is formulated. Three numerical simulation results, including a plate with a hole, a plate with a line crack and a beam, are presented. It is shown that nonlocal theory can eliminate the stress singularity at the crack tip, and can explain the size effect. The promise of the incorporation of nonlocal field theory and meshless particle method is demonstrated. Further benefit of this incorporation is discussed.
